A Challenge!

Gasolin-Sådan

As very often these days my thoughts go to my teenage boy’s room during the 1970’s with the small collection of LP’s and EP’s. BUT, it was only on its initital stage to be built up to a pretty substantial collection. LP albums at that time purchased at ca. 70 SEK (7EUR). Today, 40 years later, I can buy a used CD at the store of http://www.roadhouze.records for 79 SEK (8 EUR). I can also download a new album from Itunes for ca. 90 SEK (9EUR). Can anyone complain over prizes on good music today and can anyone refuse to pay for it??

I got nostalgic this evening I just picked out one of my of my absolute favourites from the Danish rockband Gasolin (1969-1978). I came in late in their career with the live album ‘Sådan’ (CBS Inc. 1976). It had a huge effect on me (just listen to songs like Good Time Charlie, Splittergal/totally crazy, Kvinde min/my woman and Hva’ gör vi nu, little du?/what do we do now you, little you (excuse the fantastic translations from Danish to Swedish and over to English!

Kim Larsen (song and rythm guitar), Franz Bekerlee (guitar and song), Wili Jönsson: Bass guitar, piano and song) and Sören ‘Charlie’ Berlev (drums) were my heroes. I even went to see them live in Malmö Folkets Park (the People’s Park) in August 1978, which was their last live performance. I can only regret that I came so late into their career, but what can you say…a bit poor planning of my parents, or was it planning???

I would hereby like to challenge all to take the same ride and listen to the album and proposed song. I would also like to challenge the members in all metalsouth mentioned bands…Soilwork, Darkane, Black Temple, Mörbultad, Riot Horse, Kayser, Free Fall, The Night Flight Orchestra and many more that you haven’t been inspired by these 4 fantastic Danes when it comes to the styles you have developed, which have contributed to where you are today. Challenge accepted??

These guys from Christianhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark, are metalsouth in real and pure origininality and quality! I found that out his evening!! I’m happy for this trip on a Wednesday evening…and an evening before a public holiday of tomorrow… Ascencion Day.!!

Riot Horse – another great metalsouth performance!

DSC00085We have greeted Andreas Sydow of Riot Horse a few times at this blog when he has performed the great song Chaos vs. Order together with Darkane invited as a former singer. To see him perform on March 29 on the Tivoli’s big stage on the Festival’s last night was a great experience. Also a little surprising since it was our first encounter with this classic heavy rock band with obvious blues influences. They create the kind of happy southern American atmosphere as bands like Black Stone Cherry. Sorry, for again making a comparison, but we mean here a very beneficial one!! How many great bands do we have in this town and in this region?? It’s unbelievable and I wonder which other town in Sweden of our size ca. 130.000 can compete with us!! We’re happy to live here for many reasons, but the hard rock-and heavy metal supply here is super great!!

We will get even more acquainted with Riot Horse at their new album’s release party at the Metal Bar at Tivoli on May 31. Let’s be there and hear much more of this hard freaking southern American influenced hard rock!!

Upcoming events

A World of Music Festival at the Tivoli, Helsingborg, March 27 – 29, 2014.

On Thursday March 27 the 3 day Festival starts. Totally 20 bands from the region and mainly from Helsingborg will perform on different stages at the Tivol in Helsingborg. Many thanks to the initiators of the Festival, which gives a great opportunity to meet with local bands and their music.

A direct recommendation from metalsouth is to listen to Black Temple (with a few new tracks from a new album in production) 22.30 on Friday March 28, Riot Horse (read here previous articles on Darkane) 19:30, Royal Acid Orchestra 20:15 and The Night Flight Orchestra (read here previous articles on Soilwork) 21:00 on Saturday March 29.

An why not buy tickets for all 3 days and take the chance to make new good acquaintances of local music strenght!

Kayser at the Tivoli, Helsingborg, May 24, 2014.

Yes, yes, February 17, the fantastic comeback album was released, which will be followed up with a gig at the Tivoli. The timing is superb giving us fans a possibility to build up a happy feeling for a great meet on May 24. Kayser will be supported by local Helsingborg band Outrigger, which became nationally known in Sweden as Eurovision participants with their song Echo. They did well and many phone votes were given by metalsouth. Can we call their style ‘Eurometal’?

Darkane dominates!

On Saturday October 5, Darkane was back on stage at the Metal Bar (Tivoli) in Helsingborg. Five years have passed since the band released an album and to be back on stage to play most of the songs from the Sinister Supremacy release from this year put some pressure on the band members and some great expectations in us fans who were there to meet Darkane live again.

The album has been met by great reviews and personally I think it’s the best of the six albums they have released. The introduction of the new beer ‘Darkale’ from the micro brewery Helsingborgs Bryggeri was another reason to be at the Metal Bar in good time before Darkane was to perform. The Metal Bar opened at 20.00 with a promise to have Darkane on stage at 22.00. We were there already at 19.30 in order to secure some space in this smaller establishment housing approximately 200 people. Too early we were there, but only to be met by band members Peter Wildoer (drums) and Christofer Malmström (guitars) shaking our hands and wishing us most welcome. What a welcome and what a great feeling of being really close to the band’s music! I have followed their career via the CD’s, DVD, reading articles and reviews and here I am discussing the new beer with Peter Wildoer, to which Darkane has lent part of its name and logo type. An irrelevant comment here may be that the Darkale beer was most drinkable an can be a huge success.

Darkane dominates!! At the regular Darkane slow intro with Peter Wildoer entering the stage, sitting down at the drum set giving a deep sigh we can see that some thoughts are there on how this will go. BUT, from the first strike Darkane is back and the one hour performance is incredibly intense and hits us in our faces massively.

Finally, I must also mention and thank Klas Ideberg (guitars), Jörgen Löfberg (bass) and Lawrence Mackrory (vocals) in this great performance. Lawrence Mackrory is back again on vocals. He did vocals on Darkane’s debut album ‘Rusted Angel’ (1999) and with this fantastic comeback we can only hope that he will be a stable factor of the sound that the band currently gives. His t-shirt stating ‘Nihilist’ directs our thoughts up north to Stockholm where Nihilist towards the end of the 1980’s (1987-1989) set the base for the current band Entombed, which surely will be mentioned later at this blog.

A big bonus was given to us when the previous Darkane singer Andreas Sydow (currently with Riot Horse) entered the stage and did Chaos vs. Order together with Lawrence Mackrory.Thank you to Darkane for a great performance and we look forward to seeing you again at Kulturbolaget, in Malmö, on December 8, 2013.
