Summer Summary and Records

The summer of 2023 weather-wise has been really rocky. The small area of lawn in the garden speaks of the perfect conditions of rain, sun and rain again. With some help of fertilizer and frequent lawn moving it looks better than ever.

Still some great musical memories were created and with more time indoors many more vinyls from own collection were prepared to hand over ownership to others all over the world.

Christian Thornblad and Christoffer Malmström (an all time metalsouth favourite, please, see other posts of ‘Darkane’) enlightened an already sunny evening with a wide variety of songs like ‘Does your mother know’ (ABBA),’I saw her standing there’ (Beatles), ‘Flickan i en Cole Porter Sång’ (Gyllene Tider) and ‘Kung I Baren’ (Magnus Uggla). Really high quality singing and guitar playing made eating guests at the Bistråå Strandkrog & Minigolf on Friday July 28, 2023, finish their meals quickly in order to get up there and dance…and sing!

Janne Schaffer at Ramlösa Records

1973 I was 12 years old. AC/DC was established. I had no idea at the time, which musical influences would take me in a certain direction. I was happily unaware that there was more out there than the nationally popular Sven-Ingvars, which was a strong natural ingredient in a very regional Värmländsk upbringing. Janne Schaffers debut album ‘Janne Schaffer’ (Four Leaf, 1973, EFG-7232) sells very well and goes no 1 in the Swedish charts. Elite Swedish musicians Ola Brunkert, Stefan Brolund, Bengt Karlsson and Björn J:son Lindh contributes strongly to the album and the sound. Jannes co-operation with Björn J:son Lindh was very strong, lasted for 40 years and continued all the way until Björns passing in 2013. Olof Falkenström arranged on August 5, 2023, in his all fantastic record store ‘Ramlösa Records’ a sell-and signing session of the re-mastered album and the connected book written by the author Ola Stensson. The queue into the classical record store was long and the meeting with Ola, Janne and Olof became a memory for life. Thank you Olof, for arranging this!! Let us add, that Olof except from being a record dealer master also is an author of the excellent book ‘Hårdrock, 1967-1979, 100 Skivor (Epitome Förlag, 2012)’.

As indicated initially, space creation is ongoing in our home in order to live on a smaller surface, get used to that and then take the next step into a living of reasonable space. The process of offering used records (LP, EP, CD) and now also a few cassettes at fair prices is ongoing. Some Bowie titles in really good condition, as shown above, are available. Postnord is used as postal transporter, special cardboard for fast/secure packaging and delivery is used.

Helltown Indoors Helsingborg

Inhuman world class drummer, Peter Wildoer, Darkane

The metal month of March opened Friday March 3, 2023, at the Tivoli in Helsingborg at a raging pace. Tickets at only 250 SEK were secured since long. metalsouth local favorite Darkane, Eradikated (Ludvigsborg) and Self Deception (Stockholm) were performing. Conditions cannot really be better. A hard working Darkane, which always delivers extra, connects with the fans on the floor before and after the gig and new great influences from Eradikated and Self Deception.

ERADIKATED

The former ‘The Generations Army’ from Ludvigsborg in central Skåne conquers the room at the Tivoli with its old school thrash. Please, read the very good article in Rockbladet.se (Nov. 19, 2021 by Fredrik Brolin, link below) to get familiar with the band and its members.

We are very grateful to Eradikated for the energy forwarded from the stage and we will follow these guys more carefully, listen and learn more.

SELF DECEPTION

Very appreciated that the more classical hard rock of Self Deception blended together with the more old school thrashy Eradikated set the atmosphere for Darkane to enter the stage. Also here we will listen absolutely much more and follow the band, which will play at the Sweden Rock Festival in Norje, SE, this coming summer.

DARKANE

Darkane prepares for a Latin America tour in March and gave the fans a great evening with the perfect example of how hard working and rocking the band is. Andreas “Andy” Solveström (Amaranthe, Within Y, source: Wikipedia) replaces Lawrence on the Latin America tour and makes great job this evening. During the first song we were obviously not the only ones who missed Jörgen Löfberg’s intense bass playing. Upon the introduction by Christoffer of Andy, he could also inform that Jörgen went to the ER the day before. The band informs via Facebook that he had a surgery shortly after, but will be back for the tour. Andy fits in perfectly, makes a really good Inhuman Spirits and Peter, Christoffer and Klas put in the highest gear to cover for Jörgen. It was a privilege to be at the Tivoli this evening and to see Darkane again prove that hard rock/heavy metal is for the hard working people.

We thank Darkane for a memorable evening and wishes of the best of luck in Latin America. We will surely make comments here, but kindly follow Darkane’s tour via their social media. The Opening concert will be tomorrow March 16, 2023, in Mexico City, Mexico. Buena suerte, hombres!

What more to wish for to achieve a perfect evening than to acquire 3 vinyls of Darkane. Happily we got the 3 last albums for sale in the merchandise corner and having taken a great leap towards a full house of Darkane productions in vinyl. Layers of Lies (2005) is missing.

Metal Month March

The month of March is full of fantastic metal events within the metalsouth region. Very much worth highlighting are a couple of happenings, for which we have secured tickets, will enjoy and cover. As usual, we will do our best to pass on the positive energy via a few lines and some photos. Meshuggah and the Halo Effect, 31 March 2023, Sparbanken Skåne Arena, Lund, Sweden

After more than 6 years we will have a chance to see Meshuggah during the Immutable Tour 2023 and this time in Lund. The band’s brutal style and fantastic live show puts them in the absolute world top of the heavy metal genre. Some memories from last time comes to mind including heave snow, rain and wind. It was a hassle to get there, described in a post from that fantastic evening.

Meshuggah presents a special guest, the super metal group The Halo Effect, which was formed during the pandemic 2020 by a couple of friends of the Swedish West coast. Band members are normally connected to metal mega groups Dark Tranquility and In Flames. Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquility is also lead singer of The Halo Effect. Support will be given by Orbit Culture (Eksjö, SE) and Scar Symmetry (Avesta, SE). This evening can’t get wrong with so many giants performing from the same stage.

March will be full of great musical events in the metalsouth region, which will create happy memories. If you’re in the neighbourhood, get tickets and get there. Darkane – Inhumanly strong

On July 1, 2022, Swedish thrash metal band Darkane (Helsingborg/Landskrona/metalsouth region) entered the scene in ‘Grytan’ (‘The Pot’) at 9:40 p.m. as a part of the Helsingborg city festival, HX. Light rain and we were so lucky to be there and to experience this fantastic gig.

On June 24, 2022, Darkane released a new album ‘Inhuman Spirits’ (Massacre Records, 2022), which is their first studio album in 9 years. When we back on December 3, 2016, were lucky to have tickets for Peter Wildoer’s and Christopher Malmström’s metal clinic at Dunkers in Helsingborg the question to them both was natural. Is Darkane working on a new album? The answer also from them both was quite mysterious, but created a positive sense, which the crowd collectively applauded. Something was definitely going on. Time flew and fans patiently waited and started to question a release. Was this the album, which never was meant to be produced? The waiting was rewarded, since it’s tremendously inhumanly strong.

The album speaks for itself and its totally recommended, as being on the highest metal level. To listen to the album the vinyl way ‘side by side/track by track’ is, of course, the recommended way, but for the streaming listener tracks like ‘Inhuman Sprits, The Quintessence Of Evil and A Spiral To Nothing’ are great to warm up the speakers with.

Family gathering surprise

Former band members and singers Andreas Sydow (1999-2007) and Jens Broman (2007-2011) were welcomed up on stage by Lawrence by the words: ‘Well, Darkane has been doing this for 24 years now (formed in 1998) and it’s time to welcome up former singers and Darkane family members Andreas and Jens’. The ‘Chaos vs Order’ performance was magical!

Helltown Outdoors goes Indoors

Joakim Johnn is the initiator of Helltown Outdoors, which took place in Helsingborg/Grytan on 21 July this passed summer. Local metal bands performed this wonderful and tropically heated day and evening. metalsouth was there!! Now Helltown Indoors moves Indoors to the Tivoli in Helsingborg. Tomorrow at 17.30 the gates open and the bands Humanity’s Last Breath, Kill the Kong, Ghost Iris, Chine and the metalsouth favorite Darkane will perform. Just be there, folks! But what happened to the base player in Mörbultad at Helltown Outdoors??…more to come at metalsouth.

A Challenge!

As very often these days my thoughts go to my teenage boy’s room during the 1970’s with the small collection of LP’s and EP’s. BUT, it was only on its initital stage to be built up to a pretty substantial collection. LP albums at that time purchased at ca. 70 SEK (7EUR). Today, 40 years later, I can buy a used CD at the store of http://www.roadhouze.records for 79 SEK (8 EUR). I can also download a new album from Itunes for ca. 90 SEK (9EUR). Can anyone complain over prizes on good music today and can anyone refuse to pay for it??

I got nostalgic this evening I just picked out one of my of my absolute favourites from the Danish rockband Gasolin (1969-1978). I came in late in their career with the live album ‘Sådan’ (CBS Inc. 1976). It had a huge effect on me (just listen to songs like Good Time Charlie, Splittergal/totally crazy, Kvinde min/my woman and Hva’ gör vi nu, little du?/what do we do now you, little you (excuse the fantastic translations from Danish to Swedish and over to English!

Kim Larsen (song and rythm guitar), Franz Bekerlee (guitar and song), Wili Jönsson: Bass guitar, piano and song) and Sören ‘Charlie’ Berlev (drums) were my heroes. I even went to see them live in Malmö Folkets Park (the People’s Park) in August 1978, which was their last live performance. I can only regret that I came so late into their career, but what can you say…a bit poor planning of my parents, or was it planning???

I would hereby like to challenge all to take the same ride and listen to the album and proposed song. I would also like to challenge the members in all metalsouth mentioned bands…Soilwork, Darkane, Black Temple, Mörbultad, Riot Horse, Kayser, Free Fall, The Night Flight Orchestra and many more that you haven’t been inspired by these 4 fantastic Danes when it comes to the styles you have developed, which have contributed to where you are today. Challenge accepted??

These guys from Christianhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark, are metalsouth in real and pure origininality and quality! I found that out his evening!! I’m happy for this trip on a Wednesday evening…and an evening before a public holiday of tomorrow… Ascencion Day.!!

Philip H. Anselmo – Darkane – Mörbultad – made me want to go to Malmö more than anything this evening…and to be honest Darkane can make me go far. It was close that I booked a ticket to London when they toured together with Soilwork early this Spring. Mörbultad are three guys from Helsingborg, who have a reputation of being rough and Philip H. Anselmo, of course, we know…the former Pantera singer. I had in mind to stay for Darkane and then leave for home. I stayed for a completely unforgettable evening. My good friend asked me to stay on for Philip H. Anselmo. This recommendation led to the purchase of all Pantera records and hardly Soilwork can now compete when it comes to my best gym music…only temporary!!?? I can only hope that the pictures can give some idea of a fantastic musical experience… here on this blog without one note being played.

Please, take the chance firstly to buy records CD’s and LP’s or if you live in a minimalistic home atmosphere and do not have the space to keep records in bookshelves stream and pay for the fantastic songs to give the artist financial possibilities to create more for us who are dependent on this to survive!!

Mörbultad – looking forward to seeing you again tomorrow at the Tivoli in Helsingborg. How did you manage to get Philp H. to put your band t-shirt on! Impressive work!

Darkane – forever favorites. One of the best in its genre.

Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals – why weren’t more people there? A ticket for a gig like this ca. SEK 300 (EUR 28). With a couple of beers or two an evening can end up at SEK 500 (46 EUR). I cannot see where you can better value for money. It is at the time a fantastic capre diem moment and it becomes a memory for life.

Soilwork is back in town!

Well, it’s not so well in advance, but tomorrow October 11, Soilwork returns to their roots after world touring. At numerous times we have asked for this here in the metalsouth region. Please, come back here and play. Supporting acts are all Helsingborg related, but, of course, we look forward to one day having Soilwork and Darkane concerting together. Why not at the Glumslövs IP (soccer field) and we can really talk about homecoming. Soilwork and Darkane, you are hereby challenged to do this and it’s pretty easy to here make a comment and ask for help. From this blogger you are guaranteed energy of the same level you show on stage.

metalsouth raises before The Final Collapse

metalsouth more or less raises from the dead…

Due to a job change my mind has been occupied with getting the new stuff in and getting the old out!! Now when debits and credits have balanced finally and vacation time has arrived more great opportunities to catch up on several events during the Spring and Summer season are given.

Please, be ready for a season resume with great pictures and some real metalsouth impressions.

…among others, the clinically well performing Joe Bonamassa at the Sweden Rock Festival, Norje, Blekinge. The best performance of the festival?? This is the opinion of many!

…Darkane as support together with Mörbultad (‘Battered’, Helsingborg hard core) to Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals at KB in Malmö. ENERGYYYY!!!

…or Kayser as support to Outtrigger at Tivoli in Helsingborg earlier this Spring, which became a pretty peculiar situation, when the expected headline act all of a sudden became the support… Experience over youth?? Both give their best and the headline band was worth waiting and taking another final beer for!!

Since metalsouth is now up again, although stumbling…there will be more soon…

Riot Horse – another great metalsouth performance!

We have greeted Andreas Sydow of Riot Horse a few times at this blog when he has performed the great song Chaos vs. Order together with Darkane invited as a former singer. To see him perform on March 29 on the Tivoli’s big stage on the Festival’s last night was a great experience. Also a little surprising since it was our first encounter with this classic heavy rock band with obvious blues influences. They create the kind of happy southern American atmosphere as bands like Black Stone Cherry. Sorry, for again making a comparison, but we mean here a very beneficial one!! How many great bands do we have in this town and in this region?? It’s unbelievable and I wonder which other town in Sweden of our size ca. 130.000 can compete with us!! We’re happy to live here for many reasons, but the hard rock-and heavy metal supply here is super great!!

We will get even more acquainted with Riot Horse at their new album’s release party at the Metal Bar at Tivoli on May 31. Let’s be there and hear much more of this hard freaking southern American influenced hard rock!!
