2019 – The Year of Refused

Music like literature and film is subject to personal taste, which we use to escape and relax for a while. In the ruling circumstances the music of Refused from Umeå, Sweden, is the best support. After spending time during 2019 listening a lot to the excellent albums The Shape of Punk to Come (1998), Freedom (2015) and the latest War Music (2019) the year was crowned on December 12 at Mejeriet in Lund. The album War Music we would classify as one of the best during 2019 and the concert at Mejeriet as one of the hardest we’ve seen the band perform. The proud support at Mejeriet was Rome Is Not A Town, an indie rock band from Gothenburg, Sweden. A really good performance and warm up. The vinyl was acquired and runs repeatedly on the record player.

We salute the band for taking a standpoint, which is expressed by the singer and front man Dennis Lyxzén. He often takes the opportunity to speak about equality, solidarity and that he will use his life to have an effect on people via the music. We refer to the previous gigs with Refused at KB, Borgholm In Flames and Copenhell, described at metalsouth. The band also consists of David Sandström, Kristoffer Steen, Magnus Flagge and Mattias Bärjed.

Mattias Bärjed, previously The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Free Fall, we now happily and hopefully see as a permanent member of this excellent hardcore band.

2019 was privately a tough year with sad family events and a rowdy time of reorganization at work. 2020 is here and now is the time to start to live the dream. Red, Morgan Freemans character in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is released from prison after more than 40 years. He states 2 options: ‘Get busy living or Get busy dying’.

Thanks to the existence and performance of bands like Refused there’s no other way than to look forward to what life now can give and we cannot await to experience all the good music, film-and literature that lie around the corner.

Borgholm In Flames with Saturday Guests!

STILL HOT!

The second day of the festival didn’t not present any relief from the tropical heat. Record temperatures between 30-35 degrees C have been noted all over Sweden over the period of early May until this day. The arrangement adapted to this with water easily accessible to mix with beer, which is produced by a brewery, in which In Flames singer Anders Fridén has a part ownership.

Tribulation (SE)

fullsizeoutput_dd

It’s, of course, tough to be first out in the afternoon when In Flames will conclude the day. To be early this day to see Tribulation enter the stage was really a winner. The crowd not too complete yet, but instead a feeling came trough that the pure fans were there. The band was formed in Arvika in Värmland, Sweden, which made me particularly interested and proud. Interested because it was the first time seing them live after many listenings of their albums (e.g. The Children of the Night, 2015, Century Media). Proud, because I was born in Karlstad, Värmland, and we spent many wonderful summers just outside of Arvika.

Tribulation are Jonathan Hultén, Adam Zaars, Johannes Andersson and Jacob Ljungberg. Thank you for a great performance! With your darkness and great black sound you balanced the heat and sun this early afternoon. We hope to see you somewhere in the metalsouth region very soon.

fullsizeoutput_d6

Satyricon (NO)

fullsizeoutput_d2

Norwegian black metal at its best! The darkness set by Tribulation was concretely bridged into the performance of Satyricon. The band formed in 1991 was a first live experience for us, but gave a wish for more. To see more of their strong visuals and experimental shows is now on our list. Also here the light and sunny afternoon makes the demands on the show harder, but we are happy that musically it was super good!

fullsizeoutput_ce

Graveyard (SE)

Gothenburg has produced many great bands and this festival makes this concrete in its band list. Graveyard is the next in line and was formed in 2006. The band we have covered in an earlier post from The Tivoli in Helsingborg. That gig with Graveyard had Free Fall as support, which has a natural link to another band member and performance mentioned here later. Again Graveyard dominates and shows that their blues oriented rock is perfect at an evening like this! No direct talk with the audience, but the band connects to the big crowd via its excellent music.

Graveyard members are Joakim Nilsson, Jonatan Larocca-Ramm, Truls Mörck and Oskar Bergenheim. We are thankful that Graveyard continues and we look forward to more record releases and great performances like the one at Borgholm Brinner.

Refused (SE)

fullsizeoutput_ec

When Bullet For My Valentine unfortunately had to cancel Refused was announced as joining the festival instead. According to Dennis Lyxzén the question even though asked only two weeks ahead of the festival was impossible to ‘refuse’. We at metalsouth with tickets already acquired since long celebrated this addition to the band list. In an earlier post from KB, Malmö, Refused are celebrated for the intense and energetic performance only they can do.

fullsizeoutput_f0

Yes, Mattias Bärjed’s band Free Fall supported Graveyard at the described gig at the Tivoli, Helsingborg. Mattias was the guitarist of The Soundtrack of Our Lives and has since the band stopped (2012) been active with other bands and not to forget his own Free Fall. He has also in his own name composed soundtracks of films like Gentlemen (2014) and Call Girl (2012). Since a few years Mattias has toured together with Refused and we were so happy to see him enter the stage at Borgholm Brinner.

fullsizeoutput_fc

Refused are so intense on stage and Dennis Lyxzén’s ‘acting’ on stage falls in line with the  punk oriented hardcore sound the now close to filled up court yard experiences. He moves, dances and juggles with the microphone together with a band who gives it all and has great fun on stage.

fullsizeoutput_f3

fullsizeoutput_fa

fullsizeoutput_f7

Refused are Dennis Lyxzén, David Sandström, Jon Brännström, Kristofer Steen and also for this evening Mattias Bärjed. The bands political views are clear in their lyrics and  in Dennis Lyxzén’s introduction with a question, if we in the audience were ready for some ‘revolutionary rock’. He also towards the end of the performance took the opportunity to thank In Flames for the invitation, but with a challenge in that no women or women bands were to be found on the festival stage. A feeling in our minds was clear that this will probably not be without reaction from Anders Fridén, In Flames front man and host of the festival, who was soon to enter the stage as the concluding act of the festival. The tension was in the air to see if there was to be a reaction. Still Dennis Lyxzén made us  at metalsouth immediately to think about candidates like Thundermother, VA Rocks and Arre Arre, as our particular favourites!

fullsizeoutput_fe

In Flames concludes the festival

fullsizeoutput_b0

It was time for In Flames to conclude the 2 day festival by performing again as the headline act. Many of us asked how they were to attract the audience again and not copy the Friday ending show. This had In Flames, of course, had thought through and planned for some Saturday conclusion gig surprises. At the intro, and for a couple of songs, a string quartet was on stage and made us ‘second time in a row goers’ very surprised and tempted to stay to the final end of the show.

fullsizeoutput_b3

And yes, Anders Fridén took up Dennis Lyxzén’s comment on no women being invited to the festival. He started by celebrate Refused as a band and Dennis Lyxzén’s dance-and microphone abilities. He could not himself treat a mic like that since his is wireless!!

fullsizeoutput_b6

Luckily or was it all planned??…a woman violinist (sorry, that we don’t have the name) showed up as member of the string quartet on stage and Anders Fridén turned directly to Dennis Lyxzén and now waits to see a female band member in Refused!! If the verbal battle between the two singers was planned or not doesn’t really matter. The festival was a success with the band list it offered and from this debate only gives room for more bands next year and hopefully for many coming years.

fullsizeoutput_ba

Musically, again In Flames performs as a world class band and we don’t need to go into details on song list. To be headline act two nights in a row demands a good long list of songs, which this band has! Anders Fridén was happy for the support and the ca. 9 000 sold tickets over 2 days must be considered a success. We can now only hope that the event also financially is a success to give In Flames the incentive to do this again. The Borgholm castle and the surroundings are just fantastic for a metal event. We would like to direct our outmost thanks for giving us the party of our lives over 2 days and we can only hope for a new gathering in 2019. Then maybe also with fireworks, barbecue possibilities and slightly less heat!

Borgholm In Flames!

An upcoming event worth mentioning and including a strong recommendation to visit is the Swedish melodic death metal pioneers In Flames hosting of a two day festival in the castle ruins of Borgholm on Öland (SE). It takes place 27-28th July 2018.

The Festival name is ‘Borgholm Brinner’ and the list of artists is really impressive! The artists are with In Flames hosting and ending both evenings also Refused (SE), Raised Fist (SE), Graveyard (SE), Danko Jones (CA), Satyricon (NO), Dark Tranquility (SE), Come Back Kid (CA) and Tribulation (SE). Refused and Danko Jones are already covered in earlier metalsouth posts.

Please, follow the link and inform yourself of the main metal event of this summer and look for tickets: https://borgholmbrinner.se/en/

Let’s meet and have a great metal time at Borgholm Brinner!!

(The pictures are from In Flames’ fantastic performance at Copenhell 2017)

metalsouth wakes up from the dead!

Version 2

metalsouth is back after a couple of months of ‘other occupations’. To be able to pass on the impressions and great feelings from KB, Malmö on February 26, 2016, via a few words and more images is just the perfect comeback!! Now the summer festival season is upcoming and we can promise some great post related to concerts and smaller gigs. Why not follow us at Copenhell in Copenhagen only a few metres away from real hell during June 23-25, 2016, and Clutch at the great place KB, Malmö, on August 9, 2016. Some more really great events are upcoming. Not to forget the real fine musical new record experiences from bands like Entombed AD, Black Stone Cherry, Tremonti and the successfull experiment Hollywood Vampires. Thanks for your patience of still hanging in there reading our stuff and let’s continue roll, metal friends.

Refused! Refused!

DSC01396

It’s very tempting to write a lot about this bands really colorful history. Successful album releases, US tours, break ups and reunions. The bands history we leave aside at a magical evening like this. A personal reflection presented is that Refused was connected to metalsouth during 2015 due to the ‘Freedom’ (Epitaph, 2015) album release, not immediately to the musical content, but to the best looking album cover of the year. Paintings made by Fredrik Söderberg and Design by Daniel Andersson are absolutely wonderful and the buying of a 180 gr. vinyl full size design is obvious. Taking the next step listening to the tracks makes the album’s cultural experience one of the most fully fledged products we encountered during the year of 2015.

Recommended tracks: Elektra, Francafrique, Thought is Blood, Destroy the Man and Servants of Death. The whole album is complete!!

The gig at KB, Malmö on February 26, 2016, was one of the pearls of KB’s long list of great shows and hosting. One of the fine surprises of the evening was to see Mattias Bärjed (Free Fall and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives) the all metalsouth favorite, who can be found in separate post at this blog. Let us pass on the feeling of the concert…hardcore, punk, angry, politically spot on and interesting. These guys are at its best at an evening like this and a definite world class band. Our embarrassment of paying only SEK 300 (EUR 30) for the ticket is compensated by buying the band’s ‘Freedom’ T-Shirt and the 180 gr. vinyl with the fantastic cover. Just get it and be happy!! Some photos to join us in a concrete feeling lasting after more than 3 months!! metalsouth is back, metal friends!!

Arre! Arre!

DSC01380

The evening of February 26, 2016, was perfect and the show was grand. Many of us oldies were there for the return of Refused and to get the live addition to the fantastic album Freedom (Epitaph, 2016) one of the best ever from 2015. Luckily we were there in good time to listen to the support of Arre! Arre! locally from Malmö, which surprised us in a really positive manner. The intention to pass on all these feelings directly after the gig was the strongest… Now we have June 1, 2016, and we all wonder what happened with time since. Important family matters and all too much to do at work has suppressed the impressions of this evening until now!! ‘But better late than never…’ works really in heavy metal also. Then it will be a perfect introduction to a summer in southern Sweden, which seems to have arrived a little earlier than normal. Let’s hope it also lasts longer than normal.

Katja Nielsen singer and bass player expressed the whole situation very well: “Hey, all of this people here tonight??…I thought only that my boyfriend would show up!”

Arre! Arre! performed very well and their ‘rioty’ punk rock created the perfect atmosphere at KB, Malmö, and prepared us all for the really angry boys of Refused from Umeå, Sweden.

Please, check out more on the band via the link and let us here introduce the members as:

metalsouth wakes up with new energy and joy to join in at KB, Malmö, tonight!

Arre! Arre! supports and all should be there at 20.00 to see them start!!

Join up for a great evening at KB!

metalsouth celebrates!

DSC01201

Another year with great productions has passed and we continue to spread the word and try to work as brokers between metal-and hard rock fans and music produced in this region, i.e. Helsingborg, Sweden and southbound, meaning down the coastline towards Malmö and over to the great city of Copenhagen. Of course, we cannot close our doors to great music from other parts of Sweden, Europe, US and many more fantasic musical sources.

metalsouth are now also to be found at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and celebrates for example more than 4000 visits at this blog and  2130 visitors/likes so far at the newly started Facebook page:

At Instagram, where less talk and more pictures can be found

We would like to thank everyone who visits and we hope that you will spread the word and the positive energy which is delivered by these phenomenal bands and their music.

Stay wild!! (Refused/Freedom)

The Albums Of The Year!

A few days into the new year 2016 it feels necessary to put in a few words on the passed fantastic year 2015 of heavy metal and hard rock stemming from the metalsouth region. Numerous good albums have been released and highly effectful gigs are still fresh in memory.

Albums we would like to give honorable mentions to are 3 albums related to the metalsouth region, 1 album related to the northern part of Sweden and 2 US origin albums. Please, find the listing below first and foremost as highly recommended listenings and not as a serious attempt to make technical-or classifying analysis. It’s all about the feelings, but one album still, we feel, with a little stronger sense!!

sword-high countryThe Sword, High Country, US (Razor & Tie Recordings LLC, 2015).

The Sword has become us very warm at heart since the gig at KB, Malmö, together with Black Temple. The albums still grows by each listening.

clutch-pshychic-warfare-coverClutch, Psychic Warfare, US (Weathermaker Music LLC, 2015).

The album is highly listed in most Swedish Metal press and even the highest in some. The only pain is connected to our missing out of their tour passing by Copenhagen and Gothenburg. We hope for another chance towards the summer.

refused-freedomRefused, Freedom, SE (Epitaph Europe, 2015).

Swedish hardcore from Umeå. The album is an absolute must and the variation from song to song creates curiosity and the moment of surprises are many. A top album, which makes us book their coming gig at KB, Malmö, on Feb.26, 2016.

Hatesphere-New hellHatesphere, New Hell, DK (Massacre-records, 2015).

A really close an great encounter when supporting Soilwork at KB, Malmö. The album gives us joy and a wish to go back in the bands career. A great live band with many humorous connections to the audience.

soilwork-the-ride-majestic

Soilwork, The Ride Majestic, SE (Nuclear Blast Records, 2015). Fantastic and goes without saying another masterpiece from band with roots in Helsingborg, Glumslöv and Landskrona (can it be more metalsouth…?). Earlier mentioned the great gig at KB, Malmö, together with T.A.N.K. (FR) and Hatespere (DK).

Black Temple 1

Black Temple, It All Ends, SE (Razzia Notes, Century Media, 2015).

Last, but not least in our listing comes this phenomenal first album under the Black Temple name. The band has successfully toured heavily with The Sword and Swedish metal giants In Flames. Both events are covered at this blog.

We have during 2015 seen great concerts like AC DC at Friends arena, The Sword, Soilwork, Black Temple, Hatesphere and T.A.N.K. at KB Malmö. Danko Jones was angry at The Tivoli, Helsingborg, for the closing down of the club. Devil You Know, Papa Roach and Five Finger Death Punch played at the Tap 1 in Copenhagen, the same evening as the Snow Ball Xmas Beer introduction.

‘It’s all about the feelings’ and strong feelings we have from this year, but we would like to put forward Black Temple as the ‘hardest working band of 2015’, with its roots in this region and with the ‘best album of the year’, ‘It All Ends’. By this we would like to see the band at more occasions and at festivals coming up during 2016. We take the opportunity to congratulate Black Temple of taking part at the ‘MetalTown 2016 Indoors festival’ on March 12, 2016, at Trädgår’n in Gothenburg!! 2016 has all the great possibilities to be a great heavy metal year!!
