Borgholm In Flames with Friday guests!

Historical-and weather conditions

The name ‘Borgholm Brinner’ (‘Borgholm Burns’ or writers translation ‘Borgholm In Flames)’ of the premiere festival on 27-28 July, 2018, hosted by In Flames is, of course, highly appropriate and the band list gave hope for some really hot atmosphere.

Borgholm Castle, one of the regions’s greatest tourist attraction, opened up its gates for some good music and the death metal pioneers from Gothenburg, In Flames, acted gate-and key masters for their first own festival over two days. King Karl X Gustav built it in the mid 17th century and is the only king who lived at the castle for a longer period of time. 1806 the castle was destroyed by a fire and today only limestone walls are left, but attracts tourists and is at times opened up for concerts, which many are classics in Swedish live music (source, and pls, see more at http://www.borgholmsslott.se).

A fantastic place for some heavy music and we can already here, mark it as a top arrangement, which creates hopes for a new festival in 2019 and years to come! The tropical heat which has hit Sweden this summer put some extra demands on the arrangement when it came to cooking of food, water availability and usage of more technical visual effects on stage instead of fire and fire works! It was all very adapted to the circumstances and great many thanks to In Flames for making this weekend in late July very memorable.

The Bands

In Flames (hosts and headline both evenings) (SE), Refused (SE), Raised Fist (SE), Graveyard (SE), Danko Jones (CA), Satyricon (NO), Dark Tranquility (SE), Come Back Kid (CA) and Tribulation (SE).

Danko Jones (CA)

A very welcome return by this Canadian 3 man band. Danko Jones is earlier covered by metalsouth from their Helsingborg gigs at the Tivoli. Danko Jones still writes highly appreciated chronicles in Close-Up magazine every month. All 10 album releases over the years are with the Swedish record label Bad Taste Records (Lund, in the centre of the metalsouth region). As usual Danko Jones speaks with the audience rather aggressively between the songs. It’s fun to listen to and gives a good spice to the already great performance. Danko Jones e.g. labelled this first day of the festival ‘the Swedish-Canadian Day’ since all bands were from these 2 countries. The first Canadian  band performing on the Friday was Come Back Kid.

Dark Tranquility (SE)

Another Swedish Band invited by In Flames, which meets the highest wishes for a band list of us at metalsouth. This band has also been covered and their performance this warm and sunny day brings back good memories from KB, Malmö. Like In Flames this band started its career in Gothenburg in 1989. The 1990’s was the decade when Swedish metal bands developed into world class and In Flames, Dark Tranquility and At the Gates, all from Gohenburg and representing what is called ‘the Gothenburg sound’ within the death metal genre. At The Gates would be a great candidate for next years festival, which is highly hoped for!

Raised Fist (SE)

With Raised Fist the temperature raised by the sun setting over Borgholm Castle. The band was formed in Luleå 1993. Alexander Hagman, singer, made no one disappointed in an, as alway, super energetic stage performance. One great story was when he talked to the, by this hour, ca. 4 000 person audience and asked the guy who earlier wanted a selfie with him and asked kindly if this could be done after the gig below the stage at the In Flames Gin tasting queue. When we were standing in the same line for almost 30 minutes (the gin was great!!) Alexander showed up and the guy waiting got his selfie…and quite a few more took the opportunity!!

In Flames (SE) concludes the first day!

The host of the festival needs no further introduction. A few days before the festival it was announced that ticket holders were welcome to a small club in Kalmar to warm up with some good music. The rumour spread that it may be In Flames themselves, which was true and ca. 300 could see the band warm up before the festival, and say no more…we wish we would have been there to make this festival experience complete! Congratulations to those who were!!  Expected and normal fire and fire works at an In Flames gig was not possible due to the tropical heat and drought that Sweden has experienced this summer. This put extra demands on their performance. Spectacular graphical-and digitally mastered effects replaced fire in a quite good manner. It would be interesting to know which was cheaper costwise! A really good show with new and old material, which rendered high marks (4 out of 5) in Swedish press the next morning.

Borgholm In Flames!

An upcoming event worth mentioning and including a strong recommendation to visit is the Swedish melodic death metal pioneers In Flames hosting of a two day festival in the castle ruins of Borgholm on Öland (SE). It takes place 27-28th July 2018.

The Festival name is ‘Borgholm Brinner’ and the list of artists is really impressive! The artists are with In Flames hosting and ending both evenings also Refused (SE), Raised Fist (SE), Graveyard (SE), Danko Jones (CA), Satyricon (NO), Dark Tranquility (SE), Come Back Kid (CA) and Tribulation (SE). Refused and Danko Jones are already covered in earlier metalsouth posts.

Please, follow the link and inform yourself of the main metal event of this summer and look for tickets: https://borgholmbrinner.se/en/

Let’s meet and have a great metal time at Borgholm Brinner!!

The Albums Of The Year!

A few days into the new year 2016 it feels necessary to put in a few words on the passed fantastic year 2015 of heavy metal and hard rock stemming from the metalsouth region. Numerous good albums have been released and highly effectful gigs are still fresh in memory.

Albums we would like to give honorable mentions to are 3 albums related to the metalsouth region, 1 album related to the northern part of Sweden and 2 US origin albums. Please, find the listing below first and foremost as highly recommended listenings and not as a serious attempt to make technical-or classifying analysis. It’s all about the feelings, but one album still, we feel, with a little stronger sense!!

sword-high countryThe Sword, High Country, US (Razor & Tie Recordings LLC, 2015).

The Sword has become us very warm at heart since the gig at KB, Malmö, together with Black Temple. The albums still grows by each listening.

clutch-pshychic-warfare-coverClutch, Psychic Warfare, US (Weathermaker Music LLC, 2015).

The album is highly listed in most Swedish Metal press and even the highest in some. The only pain is connected to our missing out of their tour passing by Copenhagen and Gothenburg. We hope for another chance towards the summer.

refused-freedomRefused, Freedom, SE (Epitaph Europe, 2015).

Swedish hardcore from Umeå. The album is an absolute must and the variation from song to song creates curiosity and the moment of surprises are many. A top album, which makes us book their coming gig at KB, Malmö, on Feb.26, 2016.

Hatesphere-New hellHatesphere, New Hell, DK (Massacre-records, 2015).

A really close an great encounter when supporting Soilwork at KB, Malmö. The album gives us joy and a wish to go back in the bands career. A great live band with many humorous connections to the audience.

soilwork-the-ride-majestic

Soilwork, The Ride Majestic, SE (Nuclear Blast Records, 2015). Fantastic and goes without saying another masterpiece from band with roots in Helsingborg, Glumslöv and Landskrona (can it be more metalsouth…?). Earlier mentioned the great gig at KB, Malmö, together with T.A.N.K. (FR) and Hatespere (DK).

Black Temple 1

Black Temple, It All Ends, SE (Razzia Notes, Century Media, 2015).

Last, but not least in our listing comes this phenomenal first album under the Black Temple name. The band has successfully toured heavily with The Sword and Swedish metal giants In Flames. Both events are covered at this blog.

We have during 2015 seen great concerts like AC DC at Friends arena, The Sword, Soilwork, Black Temple, Hatesphere and T.A.N.K. at KB Malmö. Danko Jones was angry at The Tivoli, Helsingborg, for the closing down of the club. Devil You Know, Papa Roach and Five Finger Death Punch played at the Tap 1 in Copenhagen, the same evening as the Snow Ball Xmas Beer introduction.

‘It’s all about the feelings’ and strong feelings we have from this year, but we would like to put forward Black Temple as the ‘hardest working band of 2015’, with its roots in this region and with the ‘best album of the year’, ‘It All Ends’. By this we would like to see the band at more occasions and at festivals coming up during 2016. We take the opportunity to congratulate Black Temple of taking part at the ‘MetalTown 2016 Indoors festival’ on March 12, 2016, at Trädgår’n in Gothenburg!! 2016 has all the great possibilities to be a great heavy metal year!!

Danko Jones – the Tivoli personified!

DSC01003

Danko Jones (guitars, vocals), John Calabrese (bass) and Rich Knox (drums) does it again. On last Friday, October 16, the Tivoli in Helsingborg was packed and sold out with faithful fans of the Canadian rock’n’ rollers. The band’s latest performance, on October 25, 2013, which can be read about here at metalsouth was the first gig of the drummer Rich Knox. The aggressive attitude of Danko Jones himself gives a certain spice to their performances. To discuss certain topics with certain parts of the audience has become a bit of a trademark. This time Danko Jones made a clear statement related to the stupidity of the city council of closing down the Tivoli (moving it to another part of the city center) due to the construction of some expensive condominium apartments to be aquired by people with loads of money. Danko Jones had no problem to get support for this statement and the whole club chanted ‘Condo-condo-condo!!’! Great fun and there was a definite sense of good chances for Danko Jones to run be elected as mayor of Helsingborg. Enough with words…let the pictures speak, but it was a great evening and thanks again from all of us at the Tivoli and great hopes to see the band back in the new location one day!

Even the concert-shirt of the evening scored with highest remarks…a Canadian Toronto trophy and great memory of Danko Jones fine performances at the Tivoli over the years.

Danko Jones – back in Helsingborg!

DSC_0106

Another easy post…it’s Wednesday today and we all look forward much to visit the Tivoli in Helsingborg on Friday October 16, 2015. The latest visit was on October 25, 2013, when Danko Jones’ 3 man band sold the Tivoli out. The prospect is that the same scenario will be also this time for this Sweden friendly, podcaster, writer in Close-Up Magazine and phenomenal rock’n’roller.

Very welcome to Helsingborg in the metalsouth region on Friday, Danko Jones Band!!

Danko Jones fills the house!

Sold out!! It stated on all posters over town. In Helsingborg with 132.000 people, not all being metalheads, unfortunately, it isn’t very common with a sold out event like this. For a change I bought the tickets many months in advance, since the combination of Bombus, from Gothenburg and Danko Jones was very interesting. The Canadian band Danko Jones (formed in 1996) has a special relationship to Sweden since all released five studio albums are from the Swedish record company Bad Taste Records. The band consists of Danko Jones (guitars, vocals), John Calabrese (bass) and Rich Knox (drums). To have secured my tickets in time was my lucky shot. Danko Jones not only filled the house. They rocked the roof out of Tivoli! AND it was Friday October 25, 2013.

DSC_0119

Danko Jones I saw for the first time live at the Metaltown festival in Gothenburg this passed summer. Not only the band’s live performance was great, but to listen to Danko Jones talking to us in the crowd between the songs gave a lot of good laughs! ‘After all these years playing at Metaltown we now understand why we keep on getting invited…it’s only to give all of you metalheads a break in the massive sound attacks of the other metal bands here at Metaltown’ (as one example of Danko Jones’ comments). Also at the Tivoli yesterday he provoked parts of the audience only to take it back before leaving the stage. Danko Jones has played the Tivoli since 2002 and has here the faithful group of fans to sell the place out! His monthly chronicles in the Close-Up Magazine are always great to read and gives a good ground to many laughs and knowledge building in this field.

No further reviews or marks are necessary. It was excellent! It was the perfect rock night out in Helsingborg. Please, continue to come to Helsingborg and sell the whole place out again and again!!
