Immortalized – Disturbed is back with high energy!

Disturbed-immortalized

We discussed this summer a sneaking urge to take up Disturbed again and investigate their comeback on the scenes and record production. Happily enough we stated that the album Immortalized was on its way.

My first encounter with the band was important when taking up a more active listening to hard rock and metal again after intense years with family life and the raising of 3 small children. Loads of soccer-, basketball-and gymnastics practices and tournaments kept bad thoughts and ghosts out of my head!! The children in that sense also were and are still life savers.

Those five years ago I paid a visit to a bancruptcy sale to one of two record stores in Helsingborg. I walked around the store and stopped a while at some for me unknown bands, but with a great will to make new musical discoveries. A big hand at the end of a heavily tatooed arm picked up a CD and said: ‘You’d better try this out. I think you will like it!’ I turned around and a man in dark leather clothes, at least 210 cm above the surface looked pretty violent, but had the kindest tone of voice. ‘Try them out, listen carefully and try to find the nuance and listen to the great singing. It would be nice if we by coincidence meet somewhere so I can to hear what you think!!’ I have never met the man again, but he comes back in my thoughts as the great representative of the unspoken friendship and kindness I feel in almost all cases of visiting festivals, concerts and smaller gigs! Hard rock makes people come together!

The album I purchased from the man’s recommendation was ‘The Sickness, 10th Anniversary Edition’ (Reprise Records/Warners, 2010). I have therafter also here aquired all their albums. ‘Immortalized’ (Reprise Records/Warners, 2015) stands up to the high quality Disturbed represents. The singing is as always outstanding from David Draiman and all instruments are skillfully handled by Dan Donegan (guitars), Mike Wengren (drums, percussion) and John Moyer (bass). This album’s cover song of Simon and Garfunkel ‘The Sound of Silence’ is only proof of succesful risk taking, but great entertainment. One of their best covers, for sure. Songs like ‘Open Your Eyes’ and ‘What Are You Waiting For’ makes us happy that Disturbed is back again after four years with this great production! The North America Tour 2015/2016 seems to be more or less sold out and we can only be ready for the release of European tour dates!!

Black Temple and The Sword – it’s all about feelings!

We hoped for an evening out of the extraordinary and what we got was magical!!

DSC00902Black Temple is delivering a tighter performance every time we see them. They are fun to watch and sound waves delivered demand ear plugs, but it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to get fist punched in our stomachs reminding us how very alive we are. Jonas humbly gave tribute to The Sword for having Black Temple as support, but at the same time an established world class band as The Sword should feel really good in having such an excellent support. One guy standing beside me firstly commented that this is good stuff and one song later screamed out loudly his happiness and appreciation towards the stage. Everyone present was not only warmed up for the Sword, but was also put in high and happy moods. A great show and a big congratulations to the album release ‘It All Ends’ (Razzia Notes/Century Media, 2015), which was brought back home by many of us. Black Temple also challenges us music consumers by releasing it firstly as vinyl. My old record player had to be adjusted a bit the next morning (what was it now 45 or 33 speed??), but now the feeling is there! Analysis of the album will follow.

The first encounter with The Sword was at Metaltown in Gothenburg in 2013. I must confess that I was uneducated and lacked knowledge in order to catch this band along with all other performances those days. Before this gig I had several really good moments with their albums Age of Winters (Kemado records Inc, 2006, debut album) and Apocryphon (Napalm Records, 2012). I was prepared and after the fantastic show of Black Temple the super syncronized pure metal stoner performance followed of the band from Austin, Texas. Every start, every pause, every note, every song were in complete sync like never heard. We were proud to be at KB this evening!

The Sword are: John D. Cronise (guitar, vocals), Kyle Shutt (guitar), Bryan Richie (bass guitar) and Santiago ‘Jimmie’ Vela III (drums).

We have been to KB, Malmö many times, but this evening the sound was better than ever, the performance better than ever and the feeling was greater than ever!! The Sword’s recently released new album High Country (Razor &Tie, 2015) will be purchased instantly and discussed here later.

The moment at Friends Arena, Solna, Sweden, July 19, 2015, will never be forgotten. The arena was full to the limit and counted for 53.686 people. The Swedish National Arena, is mainly used for football home game matches for the local AIK and the National Team. After Zlatans’s four goals vs. England on November 15, 2012, many wanted to rename it to ‘The Zlatan Arena’. The noticable difference between a concert event and a football match is that all cheer for the same team. This time Friends hosted AC/DC and all 53.686 pointed their energy in the same direction…towards the stage. No conflict, no violence…pure positive energy and happiness.

Paris (Bercy) February 25, 2009, Gothenburg (Ullevi) June 21, 2009, Stockholm (Stadion) June 3, 2010, were 3 fantastic events vistited on the Black Ice Tour. The band delivered fantastic concerts to its fans and got fantastic reviews with the highest scores. ‘The best live band in the world!!’ could be read in main newspapers.

For the Rock or Bust Tour Malcolm Young and Phil Rudd are replaced with Stevie Young and Chris Slade. The moment of the evening is magic! The mission of having also our daughter to see the band live was achieved and all family members are now with the right musical schooling!!

Some reviews in Swedish papers were disappointing to read giving the band medium scores. The main arguments being that singing and tightness not being what it once was. We, on the contrary, would like to give Brian Johnson a particular thank you, who at 67 still is touring, singing a terribly tough style and still taking the high notes. The excellent performances of Angus Young, Chris Slade, Stevie Young and Brian Johnson all lead to that 53.686 people had a AC/DC party never to be forgotten.

Press Release – Black Temple

Metalsouth is happy to have received a copy of today’s press release. We are so happy to pass it on.

Black Temple 1

BLACK TEMPLE – reveal details for new album “It All Ends”, to be released August 28th!

BLACK TEMPLE’s album debut, “It All Ends”, will be released on August 28th via Century Media Records (World excl. North America & Scandinavia) and Razzia Notes (Scandinavia)!

“It All Ends” is an intense story with impressive dynamics. With Magnus Lindberg (CULT OF LUNA) in the producer’s seat the band, that has been called the country’s most violent live act, explores new territory in their musical landscapes: A primitive primordial drive fights it out with immediate melodies, performed with an ever present sense that each note can be the last.

Jonas (bass/vocals) says: “Think of our music as Nirvana met Torche and Cult of Luna – and fucked.”

The end may be near, but “It All Ends” is just the beginning.

The album will be available as Ltd. Edition Digipak, LP+CD (including bonus track “Skullfucker”) and as digital album.

“It All Ends” track-listing:

  1. Unlikely Event
  2. Acid Rain
  3. Great Things
  4. Difficult Journey
  5. Oncoming Fire
  6. Lowpoints
  7. Sleep With The Stars
  8. 100 Years
  9. Sleepy River

Upcoming events creates happiness!!

DSC00826

Metalsouth is proud to list a couple of upcoming events, which will be covered.

AC/DC at the Friends Arena in Solna/Stockholm on Sunday July 19, 2015.

AC/DC established in 1973 the year when it all started. After the latest Black Ice Tour in 2009/10 I saw them three times. In Paris, in Gothenburg and in Stockholm. This time the intention is to also give our daughter the right schooling. The two sons had a heart thrilling experience together with my sister, brother, myself and 54.000 more in Gothenburg in June 2009. Now even my wife is forced to take the basic course in the right kind of music. Rock or Bust!!

Soilwork release of a new album ‘The Ride Majestic’ (Nuclear Blast Records) on     August 28, 2015.

Black Temple release of a new album ‘It All Ends (Razzia Notes Scandinavia Century Media Europe) on August 28, 2015. Also being support to The Sword at KB, Malmö, on the same day.

Danko Jones and band plays at the Tivoli, Helsingborg, on October 16, 2015.

Black Temple supports Melodic Death Metal Giants In Flames from Gothenburg at KB, Malmö, on October 23, 2015. The support will be on all Scandinavian dates of the In Flames Tour! Magic!! We’re sure it will not end by this…the sky’s now the limit, guys!!

Soilwork plays at KB, Malmö, and kicks off the new tour on November 27, 2015.

The listed events are all covered by metalsouth in presence and listening, which will mean a few more and hopefully interesting posts.

…there is also a rumour that Entombed A.D. will play in Gothenburg and Stockholm in January 2016…

A hectic, but very thrillling fall of 2015 followed by a great start of 2016.

Black Temple – a three part success!

DSC_0145

(picture from the famous name change gig at the Metal Bar/the Tivoli in Helsingborg on October 27, 2013)

Announced on June 23, 2015: A new agreement with the Agency Group Ltd.

Announced on June 30, 2015: Signed as supporting act to Swedish Melodic Death Metal giants In Flames from Gothenburg on all Scandinavian dates this coming fall.

Announced on July 2, 2015: A new album release ‘It All Ends’ will be out on August 28, 2015 on Razzia Records.

Three fantastic achievements, three fantastic musicians, Jonas Pedersen (vocal/bass), Jesper Karlsson (drums) and Marcus Witold Östensson (guitar) and we can only warmly congratulate Black Temple to a tremendous three part success.

Read more about what’s going on the band’s facebook-and home pages according to the following:

More personal impressions on the coming album, all new media coverage and the major meeting with Black Temple and In Flames at KB in Malmö on October 23, 2015, will naturally follow. Tickets are already secured at early morning relase hour from a crappy mobile phone with really poor coverage…happiness and it will be loads of fun!!

A Challenge!

Gasolin-Sådan

As very often these days my thoughts go to my teenage boy’s room during the 1970’s with the small collection of LP’s and EP’s. BUT, it was only on its initital stage to be built up to a pretty substantial collection. LP albums at that time purchased at ca. 70 SEK (7EUR). Today, 40 years later, I can buy a used CD at the store of http://www.roadhouze.records for 79 SEK (8 EUR). I can also download a new album from Itunes for ca. 90 SEK (9EUR). Can anyone complain over prizes on good music today and can anyone refuse to pay for it??

I got nostalgic this evening I just picked out one of my of my absolute favourites from the Danish rockband Gasolin (1969-1978). I came in late in their career with the live album ‘Sådan’ (CBS Inc. 1976). It had a huge effect on me (just listen to songs like Good Time Charlie, Splittergal/totally crazy, Kvinde min/my woman and Hva’ gör vi nu, little du?/what do we do now you, little you (excuse the fantastic translations from Danish to Swedish and over to English!

Kim Larsen (song and rythm guitar), Franz Bekerlee (guitar and song), Wili Jönsson: Bass guitar, piano and song) and Sören ‘Charlie’ Berlev (drums) were my heroes. I even went to see them live in Malmö Folkets Park (the People’s Park) in August 1978, which was their last live performance. I can only regret that I came so late into their career, but what can you say…a bit poor planning of my parents, or was it planning???

I would hereby like to challenge all to take the same ride and listen to the album and proposed song. I would also like to challenge the members in all metalsouth mentioned bands…Soilwork, Darkane, Black Temple, Mörbultad, Riot Horse, Kayser, Free Fall, The Night Flight Orchestra and many more that you haven’t been inspired by these 4 fantastic Danes when it comes to the styles you have developed, which have contributed to where you are today. Challenge accepted??

These guys from Christianhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark, are metalsouth in real and pure origininality and quality! I found that out his evening!! I’m happy for this trip on a Wednesday evening…and an evening before a public holiday of tomorrow… Ascencion Day.!!

Masters of Intro’s

Alterbridge-fortress

 Alter Bridge (Roadrunner Recors, 2013)

After another intense period of work, meaning frustration over not being able to maintain my main interest of great hard and loud music I ‘forced’ myself to order the since a few weeks released Soilwork Live in Helsinki DVD. When opening up the http://www.ginza.se site to place my order I just came to think about the 2013 Alter Bridge release ‘Fortress’. Alter Bridge has been on my best band list ever since my good and knowledgeable colleague recommended them a few years back. I was shortly thereafter and experienced a stunning live performance at Store Vega in Copenhagen, November 10, 2011. Myles Kennedy made a permanent impression in me that evening. Everyone knew that he had been struggling with an infection, but still running through the listed tour gigs and the evening before in Gothenburg, Sweden. Black Stone Cherry supported and were in a fantastic mood and made the whole building happy. When Alter Bridge came on stage some tension could be felt and Myles Kennedy had some problems…it was obvious. After an stumbling introductory song ‘Slip To The Void’ Myles turned to the audience and apologised and added: ‘I have some shit with my throat, I will do my best, but what the fuck…you will help me, won’t you!!! The respons was so massive I felt the roof would pop off Store Vega. It was the hard working hard rocking artist in a hard working band who spoke and still did the best he could for the fans. The week before our daughter’s highly expected and wished for concert with Rihanna was cancelled just before they were to enter the arena. The comparison needs no further saying.

The Album Fortress is Alter Bridge’s fourth studio album and it’s lifegiving!! It’s to be noted after a few listenings how well the songs are built up, paces are shifted, instruments and singing are concrete and clear. I can only smile when song after song is built up after fantastic intro’s. Each song stands alone and altogether make an astonishing album product when the order of the songs are well planned. If one song is to be picked in order to picture this analysis it will have to be Track 5 ‘The Uninvited’. No comments – just listen and enjoy!!

Scott Phillips (drums), Mark Tremonti (guitar and vocals), Myles Kennedy (vocals and guitar) and Brian Marshall (bass), thank you for the best inspiration and energy…it’s a ‘Wonderful Life’!!
